History of the Bellingham Armory

Armory Quick Facts:

  • The Armory was constructed in 1910 on the west side of Sehome Hill.
  • The Washington State Legislature originally allocated $75,000 for the project.
  • Over 40 architects submitted proposals. Blackwell & Baker from Seattle were selected as project architects.
  • The building's grand opening was in June of 1911. A grand military ball was held for the public, with as many as 3,000 people attending.
  • During World War I the Armory housed two companies of men for drills, rifle practice and troop coordination.
  • During World War II the Armory was a strategic defense point to spot and defend against attacks on our local timber, coal and food resources.
  • In 1972 the Armory was sold to Western Washington University, which has primarily used the facility for storage.
